Christmas break is finally here, but that does not mean the work stops. Attached you will find the bi-weekly newsletter that includes what I am talking about. But, here is a brief overview. Students are required to complete a “Christmas Break” book, in which they have to write three sentences daily about what they did. They also have a packet with Math and Reading assignments due when they return on Jan. 5, 2009.

On Friday the 19th we will be having a classroom celebration to start our Christmas Break, from 12:45 until 1:45ish. You all received a letter stating the materials needed. As well as, a request for volunteers. I have already received an outstanding response. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! If you have not signed up for materials yet, we need a few more bags of candy.

There are just two days left for your students to enter the “Operation Green Light” mascot naming contest!
The City of Durham is introducing a public information campaign to let the public know what we’re doing to make our streets better. The program is called “Operation Green Light,” and it will “drive” people who want to know more about Durham street repaving efforts to a Web site called www.DurhamOperationGreenlight.org.
All your students need to do is e-mail publicaffairs@durhamnc.gov with the following information:
1. Suggested name for the mascot;
2. Two-to-three sentences describing why the name was chosen; and
3. Student’s name, school name, and grade.
Students may submit more than one suggestion. We will have a $50 gift certificate to Northgate Mall for the winning student and we ask that the student, their sponsoring teacher, and their principal attend our October 20, 2008 City Council Meeting to receive their prize and be recognized by the City Council.
The deadline for submissions is Monday, October 13 and we will notify the winner by October 16. In the meantime, if you have any questions please contact Beverly B. Thompson, director of the City’s Office of Public Affairs, at (919) 560-4123, ext. 229 or visit the City’s Web site at www.durhamnc.gov/news/NewsDisplay.cfm?vNewsID=1633. Thank you for your interest and support!
Sincerely,
William V. “Bill” Bell
